Development was spearheaded by local Regina inventor and race track proprietor Joseph “Bazooka” Pudkin, who raised over $150 in venture capital through a public investment campaign. However, it soon became clear through office leaks that Pudkin had at some point embezzled the entire budget and fled to his estate in eville Island, Argentina, leaving behind only a clever cardboard cutout in his office. He did not even pay the trademark fee for the name Sockville, and so the title had to be changed to “Sock-vile.” At the eight month deadline, the majority shareholder SCN demanded results. What they got was an MVP of the first level for the Gameboy port, put together by Pudkin's secretary, Maxwell, in just three weeks. Desperate to reclaim at least a portion of their investment, the game was put into full production anyway. Unsurprisingly enough, only five copies were sold in the first year. The rest were pulled from circulation and reportedly dumped into the gaping maw of the almighty Shabbagoth, as was standard environmental procedure. As it turns out, the poor quality of the game itself, compounded with there being no real audience for Sockville outside Regina, where it was broadcast, made for a poor reception. However, the game has gained a cult following in recent years, due mainly to a series of YTP videos released by fringe Youtube channel DrScrimguard in 2012 through to the present, which emphasize the unintentionally uncanny elements of the game.
